Using Dropbox on iPhone 8 iOS 12.4, Crosswords 2.80.08

I was running low on downloaded puzzles in the app, so downloaded some new ones from the Wall Street Journal in *.puz format. I put them in my Dropbox account in a folder called Puzzles, then attempted to download them into the Crosswords app. I previously linked Crosswords and Dropbox on my iPhone. There is message that no crosswords were found or were previously downloaded to Crosswords. I was unable to navigate to the Dropbox folder Crosswords so put one puzzle in the root folder of my Dropbox account, that didn't work either. What is the correct procedure to make this linkage work?

    Eric,
DropBox changed the way they interact with apps. As a result, Crosswords no longer works with it. However, the next version (due out shortly) will add support for iCloud Drive documents.

Thanks. A long time ago I recall you mentioned you may be able to provide a way to sync imported crosswords between devices. Any progress on that?

    Eric,
This is still on our radar, but alas, has proven much more difficult to implement than projected.

    Sorry!

I installed version 2.80.90 (2263) on my iPhone and iPad (iOS 13.1.2) . Puzzle sync does not seem to be working from Crosswords on my MacBook Pro. I get prompts that progress is available but selecting Update doesn’t work. The prompt keeps repeating. I tried this on several puzzles and also force quit and re-opened the app. Sync between the iPad and iPhone seems to work better but is still flaky with puzzles started on the MBP. But it seems that once there is a failure any future attempt to sync fails.

You also told me that import from Dropbox was broken for a long time, but it is still on the + menu. I tried the import files from a folder in my iCloud Drive. That works fine, but leaves the file in iCloud rather than ‘moving’ it. One has to remember to delete it in iCloud or risk importing it again.

    Eric,
We've got a new version of Crosswords Mac coming shortly that fixes a puzzle sync bug there. You will probably also need to grab the latest iOS version (which we're also updating shortly).

I'm looking at how to delete iCloud files as they're imported, not sure that'll make the cut fo the next build, but hopefully the one after that.

    Thanks for the great feedback!

Installed update to Crosswords Mac today to 2.02.6 (56) . The last iOS version update fixed the sync issue. However the new Mac version still is opening with a prompt window requesting that I enter a Game Center nickname. As previously mentioned to you, I have never used Game Center and have been using a Crosswords leader board account for years.

    Eric,
Hmm, it should only ask you once. I'll take a look at that, thanks!

Re crossword files in iOS Files folder (iCloud). When I ‘import’ from that folder I see puzzle icons ‘in the cloud’ with a tiny cloud flag on them. When I select them, they download and the window closes back to the puzzle list. When I go back to get another puzzle the cloud icon is gone on the previously downloaded puzzle files making it clear it was downloaded and no longer ‘in the cloud’. When I was finished, I went to my Files folder in iOS where the puzzles are stored and it shows there the downloaded puzzles without the cloud flag on them. This makes it easy to select and delete them from the folder to avoid downloading them again. Alternatively, in future ‘import’ operations the user just needs to be sure the cloud flag is on the icon to know it was not previously downloaded. Perhaps you can provide user instructions how to do this by watching the flag on the icon.

I would also suggest that you allow a user to select multiple puzzles to download from the iCloud folder. At present only one file can be selected and the app returns immediately to the puzzle list forcing you through all the steps again. I usually collect a couple of dozen crosswords from various sources and move them to the iOS iCloud Files folder at one time and then download them to the app a few at a time.

Let me know if I am not being clear - I can respond with screen shots if you think that would be helpful.

    Eric,
My apologies for the tardiness of this reply! We've released a new version that should help address the issues you're seeing. As for multiple puzzle selection, I don't believe there are APIs that allow us to do this (the entire Files infrastructure is managed by the OS, and we have very little insight or control over it.
