Is this on an iPad or an iPhone? Is there a small button in the lower right of the keyboard with a downward facing arrow?

It’s an iPad.
Yes the small button in the lower right of the keyboard with the downward facing arrow is there. When I tap it the keyboard just goes away. Then when I tap any square in the puzzle the keyboard just comes back in the middle of the puzzle.

Ben,
I think I solved it. When I tapped that button with the down arrow it would not solve the issue. But when I held my finger on that button and just dragged it down, the keyboard came down and appears to be staying down.

Great! That's a feature of the iPad keyboard, not of Crosswords, so you can use that in other apps, too. Enjoy!
